How to Donate

PC4peace is currently seeking donations of the following main types:

  • computers - see below (please pay special attention to the section on **secure data removal)
  • funds - we aim to ship computers at no cost to the recipient (needy schools) thus your monetary donations of any amount is greatly appreciated -
  1. use our adclicks - the sponsors then pay PC4peace a nominal amount for each visit to their site

  • storage space - contact us, we are in great need of storage space (all sizes) in our project locations
  • transportation - if you can donate truck space, ocean going vessel space or even able to drive a car in our project locations we will be eager to hear from you.

Computer Donations

Due to lack of storage space and transportation means, we ask that you contact us before donating computers in order to resolve logistics.

Minimum Requirements for Donated Computers


PC Apple
desktop minimum - PIII (or equivalent) 800 MHz

laptop minimum - PIII (or equivalent) 800 MHz

* LCDs over CRT type of monitors -- due to storage, electricity consumption and shipping weight issues

  • All donated computers must be in working condition.
  • Missing parts can be negotiated.
  • Multi-voltage systems preferable (110v-240v)

additionally we accept:

  • Printers: working dot matrix, laser, and ink jet printers with cartridges and cables
  • Networking (wireless and wired): in working order -- network switches, routers, hubs, Ethernet cards, LAN cable, etc...
  • Peripherals: working scanners, digital cameras, CD ROM, external modems, LCD projectors, and UPSes (Uninterrupted Power Supply)
  • Parts: modems, working extra hard drives (2.5 and 3.5 inch), working optical drives (CD and DVD - rewritable drives are especially sought)

 

HOW TO CHECK YOUR COMPUTER SPECS:
1. If the computer is branded (e.g Dell, IBM, Compaq etc)
  • find the model number
  • look up the model number on the maker's website and search for the computer specs
2. Connect a monitor to the computer(s) and enter BIOS setup utility (each maker may be unique - consult your manual to learn how to enter the bios)
3. If the computer is operational: use a program such as WCPUID to reveal CPU speed, and other specs http://www.h-oda.com/ (for windows systems)

** Secure Data Removal --- recommended free software to securely remove data from a computer

To remove user selected data (operating system intact)

Eraser is an advanced security tool (for Windows), which allows you to completely remove sensitive data from your hard drive by overwriting it several times with carefully selected patterns. Works with Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP, Windows 2003 Server and DOS. Eraser is Free software and its source code is released under GNU General Public License.
Simple File Shredder is a utility that securely deletes your files so they can't be restored using recovery software.

To completely wipe a hard drive (operating system and all data)

Darik's Boot and Nuke ("DBAN") is a self-contained boot floppy/CD that securely wipes the hard disks of most computers. DBAN will automatically and completely delete the contents of any hard disk that it can detect, which makes it an appropriate utility for bulk or emergency data destruction.

DBAN is a means of ensuring due diligence in computer recycling, a way of preventing identity theft if you want to sell a computer, and a good way to totally clean a Microsoft Windows installation of viruses and spyware. DBAN prevents or thoroughly hinders all known techniques of hard disk forensic analysis.
